Monday Morning Starter: Check Holiday Hours Before You Head Out
October 12 is a federal holiday, but postal services, stock trading and local schedules do not all follow the same timetable.

Before heading out this Monday, check the hours for the service you need. October 12 is Columbus Day on the federal calendar. That does not mean every business, school or local service is closed.
The U.S. Postal Service says Post Office locations will be closed for the holiday, with regular mail delivery and retail services resuming Tuesday, October 13. Online tools remain available for tasks such as purchasing postage, printing prepaid labels and arranging a mail hold. Some lobbies have self-service kiosks; check the particular location before making a trip.
Stock-market hours follow a separate calendar. October 12 is not listed as a closure on the New York Stock Exchange’s 2026 holiday schedule. Its published core trading session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern. That calendar does not establish the hours of your bank branch or the availability of every financial service.
For school, transit and municipal-office plans, use the organization’s own holiday notice. A federal holiday alone is not enough to determine a local schedule. If you have an appointment, confirm it with the provider.
Check your destination’s hours before leaving. Postal counters and regular mail have a confirmed holiday interruption; other plans need their own check.
