Netflix and Microsoft's 2022 advertising partnership explained

Netflix selected Microsoft as its global advertising technology and sales partner for a planned lower-priced, ad-supported subscription. It was not a sale of Netflix to Microsoft.

What the partnership covered

Netflix announced on July 13, 2022 that Microsoft would be its global advertising technology and sales partner. The work concerned a planned lower-priced subscription supported by advertising, alongside the company's existing ad-free options. Netflix described the project as being at an early stage.

Technology and sales support are specific roles. The announcement did not say Microsoft was buying Netflix, producing every Netflix program or making all subscriptions cheaper. It described the infrastructure and advertising relationships needed for a new kind of plan.

A historical plan is not today's offer

Ad-supported and ad-free subscriptions fund viewing differently. A lower subscription charge can be accompanied by advertising rather than representing the same service at a universally reduced price. The July announcement did not establish every launch market, current price or later catalog restriction.
