The player behind the record
Rod Marsh, who died on March 4, 2022 aged 74, represented Australia in 96 Tests. The ICC's tribute records 355 Test dismissals, a world record when he retired. Wicketkeeping dismissals combine catches and stumpings; they are not a count of runs scored or wickets taken by a bowler. His long association with fast bowler Dennis Lillee made the caught-Marsh, bowled-Lillee combination a defining part of Australian cricket.
Marsh also made three Test centuries. His contribution therefore extended beyond collecting chances behind the stumps: a wicketkeeper who contributes runs adds a second dimension to the team's balance.

The ICC Hall of Fame identifies his international career as 1970–1984 and his induction as 2009. His 92 one-day internationals produced another 124 dismissals. Those figures belong to a different format and should not be added to the Test figure when comparing a Test record.

Marsh subsequently worked in academy development in Australia and England and served as Australia's chairman of selectors from 2014 to 2016. That mentoring chapter helps explain why tributes remembered both a formidable competitor and an influential teacher. This profile replaces an empty topic listing with a dated account of the career.
