BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier gave the Cougars’ unbeaten start a versatile offensive centerpiece Saturday, contributing touchdowns as a passer, runner and receiver against Notre Dame.

The sophomore completed 23 of 36 passes for 224 yards, threw one touchdown and ran for two more, according to BYU’s official account. He also caught a touchdown on a double-pass play. He contributed to BYU touchdowns through three different offensive roles in the same game.

BYU defeated Notre Dame 28-24 at LaVell Edwards Stadium, improving to 6-0 while the Irish moved to 6-1. Notre Dame’s official report independently confirms the result and records. Bachmeier’s late touchdown pass to tight end Walker Lyons restored BYU’s lead.

The performance illustrates the different ways BYU can involve its quarterback in the offense. It does not establish a new award, guarantee a playoff berth or predict a ranking change.

The teams entered the game ranked No. 8 and No. 2 respectively. Those are pregame rankings, not a claim about a new Sunday poll.
