James Cameron has congratulated Marvel after Avengers: Endgame moved ahead of Avatar again in worldwide theatrical box-office earnings. Benjamin Lindsay reported the filmmaker’s message for TheWrap on Friday.
Cameron’s note acknowledged the return of moviegoers to cinemas following the September rerelease, titled Avengers Endgame: Encore. The theatrical event is a rerelease of the 2019 film, rather than an entirely new Avengers feature.
The Numbers, checked on October 17, lists Endgame at about $2.938 billion worldwide and Avatar at about $2.924 billion. The Encore edition was released on September 25, 2026, according to The Numbers. These current totals differ from the earlier figures quoted in Friday’s report, as box-office reporting continues to update.
The comparison concerns reported worldwide ticket revenue accumulated across theatrical releases. It is not a ranking adjusted for inflation, a count of individual viewers or a comparison of studio profits.
The reversal also illustrates how rereleases can change a film’s lifetime total long after its original opening. Cameron’s congratulations provides a public acknowledgement of that renewed competition.
