Julia Louis-Dreyfus makes her Broadway debut in Other Desert Cities
The Hudson Theatre revival pairs her with Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Lily Rabe and fellow Broadway newcomer Joe Keery. Opening reviews differ on the production and its star.

What to know
- Louis-Dreyfus and Joe Keery are both making their Broadway debuts.
- The cast also includes Ed Harris, Allison Janney and Lily Rabe.
- The limited engagement is listed through January 17, 2027.
- Critics have offered differing assessments; praise for an individual performance is not the same as acclaim for the whole revival.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus has reached a new career milestone: her Broadway debut. The revival of Jon Robin Baitz’s Other Desert Cities opened Sunday, October 18, at the Hudson Theatre, with Louis-Dreyfus playing Polly Wyeth in an ensemble directed by John Benjamin Hickey. The Broadway League’s official production record confirms the opening and identifies this as her first Broadway appearance.
Who is playing whom
Louis-Dreyfus plays Polly opposite Harris as Lyman Wyeth. Rabe plays their daughter Brooke, Keery their son Trip, and Janney plays Silda Grauman. The official record lists the family’s Palm Springs home as the setting, with most of the action at Christmas in 2004. Previews began September 29. IBDB.
The drama turns a family reunion into an argument about memory, loyalty and the right to tell a painful story. For audiences drawn by a familiar television star, that is useful context: this is an ensemble family drama rather than a stage version of one of Louis-Dreyfus’s screen comedies.
What opening reviews say
USA TODAY critic Patrick Ryan praised Louis-Dreyfus’s comic bite and Keery’s performance while finding the revival uneven as an ensemble. His review, republished by AOL, treats the two debuts as highlights without endorsing the production as a whole.
Time Out’s Adam Feldman was less persuaded by Louis-Dreyfus in the more dramatic passages, while praising Harris. These are the critics’ assessments, not the result of a NewsCubby visit to the show.
The difference matters to anyone deciding whether to attend. An opening-night celebrity milestone can be significant even when reviewers disagree about how well the production works. Neither star recognition nor a single enthusiastic sentence should be presented as a unanimous critical verdict.
What audiences can check next
The engagement’s listed end date is January 17, 2027. Current performance availability and prices should be checked through the production’s official website; this article does not quote a fixed ticket price or promise that a particular performance has seats.
