The Philadelphia Phillies have signed Don Mattingly to a two-year contract for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, the team announced on October 14. The agreement settles who will manage the club next season after Mattingly served as its interim manager in 2026.
From interim appointment to a two-year deal
In his October 14 Yahoo Sports report, Chris Cwik describes Mattingly’s move into the full-time role. Philadelphia had promoted him after dismissing Rob Thomson during a 9–19 start in April. Cwik reports the team went 79–55 afterward and reached the postseason, before losing to Atlanta in the wild-card round.
The team’s own announcement confirms the contract and the two seasons covered. The appointment is separate from any future roster moves: it does not announce a player signing or establish how the Phillies will perform in 2027.
Mattingly previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins, as Cwik notes. The current news is Philadelphia’s commitment for 2027–28, rather than a new appointment at either previous club.
