U.S. retail sales rose 0.8% in September. The dollar estimates are not adjusted for price changes.

U.S. retail and food-service sales increased 0.8% in September to an estimated $745.0 billion, the Census Bureau reported Thursday. Sales were 6.3% higher than a year earlier. August’s monthly increase was revised to 1.3% from 1.1%. The estimates account for seasonal and calendar effects but are not adjusted for price changes. That means higher dollar sales cannot be read as the same increase in the quantity of goods purchased.
