Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s new version of The X-Files to series, Disney announced on October 13. Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel will lead the production, which comes from Onyx Collective and 20th Television in association with Proximity Media.
The premise centers on two accomplished but very different FBI agents assigned to investigate unexplained phenomena. TV Insider reporter Erin Maxwell says the actors will portray new characters, rather than replacements for Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
Disney says Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and remains an executive producer. Jennifer Yale serves as showrunner, while original creator Chris Carter is among the executive producers.
The confirmed development is the series order. A release date has not been announced in the sources reviewed. Casting reports and the project’s relationship to the original series should not be turned into promises about returning characters or a premiere timetable.
