California voter-list lawsuit raises stakes for mail ballots
The Justice Department filed suit Thursday asking a federal court to stop California from counting mail ballots from people federal agencies identify as likely noncitizens until citizenship is verified. California Secretary of State Shirley Weber disputes the reliability of the federal list and says requested supporting data and methodology have not been provided. The complaint makes allegations and seeks relief; it is not a judicial finding of unlawful voting.

California fire-weather warnings continue Friday
Gusty winds and low humidity are creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread in parts of California. National Weather Service warnings have different local expiration times: 10 a.m. Pacific for parts of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills, 11 a.m. for the North Bay Interior Mountains, and later Friday for specified southern Sierra and Kern County mountain areas. A warning describes dangerous weather conditions; it does not itself establish an active wildfire or evacuation order.
