Sanguine, the workplace body-horror film directed by Marion Le Corroller, won the best-feature award in the Official Fantàstic competition at the 59th Sitges film festival. Organizers announced the result on October 17, placing her first feature at the top of the competition.
The film follows Margot, a young medical resident struggling with the demands of an emergency department. As patients her own age arrive with unexplained symptoms, she begins noticing disturbing changes in her own body. The festival’s film listing names Mara Taquin, Karin Viard and Kim Higelin among the cast.
The premise connects a familiar anxiety—being pushed beyond your limits at work—to the physical transformations of body horror. In reporting from Sitges, Aitziber Azpeitia and Astrid Meseguer of La Vanguardia describe the film as a darkly comic examination of professional pressure. Le Corroller told the newspaper that her experience in finance helped shape the story.
Sanguine had already screened in Cannes’ Midnight Screenings, outside the main competition. Cannes identifies it as Le Corroller’s first feature. Its Sitges win is a new award, rather than the film’s first festival appearance.
The official Sitges list also gave Joko Anwar the directing prize for Ghost in the Cell. The main jury award for Sanguine is distinct from the audience’s top choice, which went to Travis Knight’s Wildwood.
For horror fans, the result puts a new filmmaker and an unfamiliar title on the discovery list. The award itself does not establish a US theatrical or streaming release, and no US availability date has been verified for this article. NewsCubby has not reviewed the film.
