What to know

  • The conference says the schools supported continuing the game.
  • Its explanation centers on military notification procedures and family privacy.
  • The cause of the fatal fall remains under investigation.

The American Conference has explained why UTSA’s game against Navy continued after an Air Force member fell during a pregame rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome on October 17. Nellis Air Force Base later confirmed his death, KSAT reported.

The conference’s account

In a statement reproduced by KSAT, the conference said officials consulted the schools, venue management and local authorities. It said the airman’s condition had not been publicly confirmed during those discussions and cited its bylaws and military notification safeguards.

The account explains the decision-makers’ stated reasoning. It does not independently establish everything each official knew or resolve whether the decision was appropriate.

Two questions remain separate

The investigation concerns how the fall happened. The decision to continue concerns how a sporting event responded to an emergency. Evidence answering one question will not automatically answer the other.

That distinction matters when interpreting public reaction. Disagreement with the decision does not prove a mechanical cause, and an eventual technical finding would not by itself settle questions about communication with teams and spectators.

What would add clarity

Further official findings could clarify the incident. A fuller account of the decision process would identify what information was available, when it arrived and how it affected the choices made. Those are questions for subsequent reporting, not facts established by the current statement.
